Columbus, Ohio One Columbus has released its new Columbus Region Automotive Industry Report, analyzing how local automotive suppliers are navigating the transition from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs). The findings reveal a resilient and adaptable supply chain that is positioning itself for long-term success despite shifting market conditions and an evolving EV adoption timeline.

“Automotive manufacturing is embedded in the Columbus Region’s DNA, and this report makes it clear that our suppliers are ready to compete in the industry’s next era,” said Kenny McDonald, President and CEO of One Columbus. “Even as the EV transition faces uncertainty, Columbus Region-based manufacturers are proving their ability to innovate, pivot, and remain at the forefront of an industry undergoing rapid change. Our strong workforce, infrastructure, and strategic location provide a solid foundation for continued investment and growth in this evolving sector.”

Key Takeaways from the Report:

• Most suppliers are evolving, not disappearing.
The majority of Columbus Region suppliers are adapting by modifying their products for EV applications or expanding into new industries.

• Workforce challenges are improving.
Companies report that hiring conditions have improved compared to recent years, thanks in part to state-backed workforce development programs.

• Few suppliers face shutdown risk.
Only a small percentage of manufacturers are at high risk of phasing out completely due to the transition.

• Spending on EV-related development has slowed.
Many companies have paused or delayed investments in EV product development and manufacturing as they wait for market stability and clearer industry direction.

• Suppliers want more clarity on the EV transition timeline.
A common challenge is the lack of clear expectations for when automakers will fully commit to EV production, making it difficult for suppliers to plan long-term investments.

As a critical hub for automotive production, the Columbus Region is home to 255 automotive supplier locations and over 27,000 full-time industry jobs. Honda’s presence remains a key factor in shaping the local supply chain, with the company continuing to invest heavily in EV technology through initiatives such as its new EV Hub in Ohio, set to launch in late 2025.
