Prep Time

October 28, 2019

“There is no short cut to achievement. Life requires thorough preparation – veneer isn’t worth anything.”
-George Washington Carver

Our beloved Buckeyes prepare for a whole week to meet their challenger each weekend. They study film, they practice each possible scenario and they visualize what success will look like on game day. In business and economic development, our schedules are too often overloaded. We often run from one meeting to the next or try to work the issues room by room. Given that the issues we are working on can very directly impact people’s lives and livelihoods, we would do well to slow down in order to make better decisions and seek better outcomes.

This week, take some control of your schedule. If at all possible, schedule real preparatory time so that your meetings can truly advance each issue. Take time to research not only the issue, but the participants, so that you understand the backgrounds of the people in front of you. Take time to define the objective of the meeting rather than just showing up. If you are a participant and not the leader, make a few phone calls and offer your assistance beforehand.

Our work is important. A lot is at stake in our communities and in the goals we seek to conquer. Slow down to speed up and let’s have a great week.
