Issues impacting economic development can be incredibly complex. The big issues of technology disruption, globalization and trade policy can confuse or even overwhelm most of us. While we should not ignore or dismiss these issues, sometimes the seemingly inconsequential, mundane developments can be just as impactful.
I was reminded of this when reading an article about neighborhoods in Detroit that had been “re-illuminated” by the installation of LED lighting. A quote from the article should be an economic development maxim: “Nobody wants to come over somewhere it’s dark.”
While we are heads down trying to keep pace with the big changes, let us not forget the small gestures that are often taken for granted and help inspire and illuminate our communities.
