“If the highest aim of a captain were to preserve his ship, he would keep it in port forever.” – Thomas Aquinas
Geopolitical tensions, interest rates, and political divisiveness are running high. Confidence in cities and some of our key industries is running low. As we plan for 2024, there is no doubt we want to take these issues into account, but we also can’t be afraid to do what it takes to bring change and create opportunity.
Now is the time to make big plans not out of wild optimism, but because there will be rough waters and headwinds. 2024 will require a massive effort by your entire community to allow companies to expand and locate new facilities in your market. You will have to meet the customer where they are – not where you want them to be. You will have to invest in relationships because so many faces have changed in the past few years. You will have to bring very creative solutions to the issues of workforce development, site planning, downtown redevelopment, and energy solutions.
Bold plans require a total commitment to your priorities. If you want to “go big”, you must sacrifice in some areas to exceed expectations. This will also require hard work by your entire team and its stakeholders. The economic development organizations that are inspired to achieve more and willing to make the necessary sacrifices will likely get further than those that are hesitant to change. Let’s have a great week, lift each other up, and move forward together!Kenny McDonald
