“Encourage your people to be committed to a project rather than just be involved in it.” – Richard Pratt

There are times when bold actions and blunt instruments are needed to make change. More often, change comes from making thoughtful, small changes, and relentlessly practicing the fundamentals over the long-term. Both have their place when developing and executing your strategy to develop your community.

You may need to tear something down to recreate it or let go of ideas that have outlasted their utility. Sometimes, systems and organizations need to make radical changes to invigorate and change the culture and/or the strategic direction. This may be the right thing to do. But be careful, blunt instruments should be used carefully and sparingly.

We don’t often lose our competence; we lose our commitment. I have the ability to go to the gym every day, but I don’t always do it! Real change starts with focus on the mission, practicing the fundamentals, and a commitment to excellence.

This week, think about what tools and leadership style is required to get to your goals. What needs to be torn down or re-imagined? More importantly, think deeply about your commitment to the mission and how well you are practicing the fundamentals. Are you doing all you can do to advance your community, or have you become complacent?

Let’s have a great week, lift each other up, and move forward together.
