“If there is anything that we wish to change in the child, we should first examine it and see whether it is not something that could better be changed in ourselves.”
-C. G. Jung
While at a groundbreaking the other day, I noticed a few children in the crowd. I think that is great and something we should do each time we have an event. What better way to teach the next generation the power of community, business and economic development?
It also reminded me that a child’s view of economic development is much different from the adults in the room. I suspect a child might view success as a safe community, a good school, and knowing that their parents and family members have jobs and careers nearby. It may be a simple way to look at it, but I would not call it naïve.
This week let’s try to look at economic development success through the eyes of our children. Instead of getting twisted into a pretzel about measures of success, let’s ask what our youngest stakeholders might think of their community. I suspect it will not only put things in perspective, but force us to think about what success is and what it is not.
