“To provide meaningful architecture is not to parody history, but to articulate it.”
–Daniel Libeskind

The re-opening of the Notre Dame cathedral and all of the work and expense that went into it serve as a powerful reminder of two things. First, people, both residents and visitors, share a deep emotional connection to architecture in cities. Second, cities have an incredible resilience, continually rising and adapting as the world evolves.

Thank you to those who committed to rebuilding and funding the effort even before the embers of the fire that destroyed much of this iconic building were extinguished. Thank you to those who carried out the work, honoring the builders and rebuilders who came before them across hundreds of years of history. Finally, thank you to everyone who will visit and honor these efforts in the years and decades ahead.

While the iconic architecture and symbols in your city may not be as famous—or as old—as Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, I encourage you to work hard to preserve and adapt them to modern times, ensuring they thrive for future generations. How are you honoring the symbols of your community—its buildings, main streets, and historic landmarks? If none exist, should you consider creating them for future generations? These symbols are more than structures; they are reflections of our shared identity and aspirations, standing as reminders of where we’ve been and the limitless possibilities of where we can go.

Let’s have a great week, lift each other up, and move forward together.
