Why Columbus Belongs Among America’s Best Places to Live

A steadily growing population, drawn by opportunity and affordability, continues to make Columbus the place to be

More people are choosing the Columbus Region every year, drawn by a combination of opportunity and momentum that few metros in the country can match.  The latest 2025 U.S. Census population estimates underscore the trend: the Midwest was the only region where every state gained population, and Ohio led the way — powered, by Columbus.

Among the nation’s 55 largest metros, Columbus metro ranked 15th for percentage growth, joining a group dominated by Sun Belt markets. Among the top 15 fastest growing metros, Columbus, Seattle and Indianapolis are the only metros outside Sun Belt. In fact, the Columbus metro’s growth rate doubled the national rate and outpaced the rate of growth of three Midwest heavyweights: Chicago, Detroit and Minneapolis.

The comparison with Chicago is especially noteworthy. Columbus added 21,312 residents — nearly matching Chicago’s 22,925, despite Chicago being several times its size.

So why Columbus? And why now?

Start with the thing that actually moves people across state lines: a job. The Columbus Region has a highly diverse economy in which no single industry sector accounts for more than 16% of employment. What’s layered on top of that stability is genuine momentum in the industries that will define the next economy. Amgen is investing in life sciences here. Anduril is bringing defense-technology manufacturing. These are the kind of projects that anchor the growth of industry ecosystems and pull talent in from across the country.

The headquarters map tells the same story. Relative to its size, Columbus punches far above its weight: it ranks fourth among all large U.S. metros for Fortune 1000 headquarters per 100,000 residents. With 18 Fortune 1000 companies calling it home, Columbus hosts more corporate headquarters than Seattle, Miami, or San Diego. And the hiring is keeping pace — Columbus is the Midwest’s number-one job-growth market, by both total net new jobs and percentage growth, adding 19,373 jobs over the past year at a rate double that of our nearest Midwest competitor, and ten times that of the national rate.

All of which brings us to the most telling indicator of all — not where people are now, but where the next generation is betting it can build something. According to a recent Wall Street Journal analysis, the Columbus Region ranks fourth in the nation as a hiring hot spot for new college graduates. Not fourth in the Midwest — fourth in the entire country, and the only Midwestern metro to crack the top 15. Because new grads are the most mobile, least encumbered people in the economy, they can go anywhere. They have no mortgage to anchor them, no school district to weigh, and can go wherever there is the promise of a future. When they choose a city in disproportionate numbers, they’re casting an early vote on where opportunity is heading.

And new grads are choosing Columbus. Growth and opportunity here are sustaining a success loop. Jobs draw people. People draw companies. Companies create more jobs. The Columbus Region’s diverse economy gives that cycle resilience. For anyone still deciding where to plant roots, the data has already made the case. Columbus is  one of the best places to live right now and is likely to hold that distinction for decades to come.
