Columbus, Ohio — Sam Dong Ohio will invest more than $13 million to expand its Delaware manufacturing facility, creating 30 new jobs and strengthening the domestic supply chain and supporting growth in the electric grid infrastructure.
The expansion includes the installation of new copper casting equipment that will allow Sam Dong to more than double its oxygen-free copper rod production capacity, increasing output from 5.5 million pounds monthly to as much as 14 million pounds. The investment will make the Delaware facility the largest producer of oxygen-free copper rod in North America and help meet growing demand from transformer manufacturers, automotive companies and other industrial customers.
Founded in South Korea in 1977, Sam Dong serves more than 180 customers in 40 countries and operates facilities across South Korea, the United States and Poland. The company specializes in winding wires and oxygen-free high conductivity copper products used in transformers, electric motors, automotive systems and other critical electrical applications. Company leaders said Delaware’s proximity to the rapidly growing Columbus Region, access to a skilled workforce and location within a day’s drive of many North American customers made the community a natural choice for continued investment.
“Demand for reliable electrical infrastructure continues to grow, and this investment positions Sam Dong to meet that need for decades to come,” said Randy Kaiser, chief operating officer and vice president of Sam Dong Ohio. “Our Delaware facility has been a cornerstone of our North American operations, and this expansion allows us to increase capacity, support our customers and continue investing in the community that has supported us for many years.”
The project is expected to create 30 new jobs with annual payroll exceeding $1.8 million, in addition to the 154 existing positions at the Delaware facility.
“Sam Dong has been a great partner of the Delaware community, and we’re proud to see them continue to grow,” said Mayor Carolyn Kay Riggle, City of Delaware. “This expansion means more good jobs, more production and another strong reminder that Delaware is a place where international companies can put down roots and succeed.”
Oxygen-free copper rod is used in transformers and other electrical equipment where conductivity, durability and reliability are essential. As utilities modernize infrastructure and expand the electric grid, Sam Dong’s oxygen-free high conductivity copper products help support the systems that power homes, businesses and industry across North America.
“This is advanced manufacturing tied directly to the future of the grid,” said Jonas Peterson, president of One Columbus. “Sam Dong’s expansion strengthens a critical supply chain at a time when power demand is rising and infrastructure needs are growing. It also shows how international companies are using Delaware to serve major North American markets from a strong manufacturing base.”
“Ohio continues to win advanced manufacturing projects because companies can build, hire and serve major markets from here,” said JobsOhio President and CEO J.P. Nauseef. “Sam Dong’s expansion strengthens a critical supply chain for power distribution while creating 30 new jobs in Delaware, reinforcing Ohio’s position as a state where global manufacturers can grow with confidence.”
The expansion will take place at Sam Dong Ohio’s existing facility at 801 Pittsburgh Drive in Delaware.
