Work With What You Have

As we approach the end of the decade, the Columbus Region has undertaken an intense analysis of our economy, our demographics and the competitive forces that will continue to impact our community. While it is often said that the economic developer’s work is to achieve positive change in the markets they serve, it is just as true that we must work within our communities.

It is our communities that have the raw materials, infrastructure, specific demographic makeup, core industries, rich history and culture. Analysts may point out that some of these things may be deficits or weaknesses, but often they are ripe to be positioned positively.

Community leaders can turn many of these analyses around. A community without a particular infrastructure can instead use new technologies to leap frog into the future. Rather than becoming something they’re not, a rural community should celebrate their size and culture. If a community is tied to a major employer, they can work together on their innovation strategy to spur local business creation.

With the right mindset and plenty of patience, everything in our communities can be turned into an advantage for expanding and attracting business and positive economic growth.

This week, let’s focus on what we have and make the most of it every day.
